What is zoning? |
Zoning is a tool for organizing land and the way we use it. While that may sound abstract, zoning has a tangible impact on your day-to-day life, because it heavily shapes the layout, design, and character of our communities
Title 19 of the Maui County Code-T19 for short-is where our zoning laws live. T19 identifies how land and buildings can be used and developed. It also explains administrative processes such as applying for certain permits and how they are approved. |
Why is the Title 19 being rewritten? |
Our zoning code was first adopted in 1960—nearly seventy years ago! From technology, to transportation, to culture, the world has changed dramatically since then. An audit of T19 was completed in 2018 which identified many areas of the code that can be improved.
Over the years, there have been numerous amendments throughout T19, however over time this has resulted in a code written piece by piece rather than as a unified document. The T19 rewrite will in its most general terms create a more cohesive and current zoning code which reflects the shared vision of our general plan and adapts to the challenges and opportunities of the present era.
